here is some advice
To the British Government,
My name is Hayter Reed and I was in a residential school in 1991 in Alberta. When I was a young child I was taken from my home with out any say in what I wanted to do. You took me so far away from my home that I knew, even with my knowledge of the woods, I wouldn’t be able to find my way home. I tried to memorize every turn and every bump in the road so that if I managed to get outside I could maybe make it back. I want you to know what you have been putting so many children through for years. They way you handled this was COMPLETELY unacceptable.
While I was in the residential school, I was starved and beaten to extremes. Most of the people you had working for you were not trained or slightly trained. Any mishap, to the smallest extreme was punished as if it was murder. I remember I spilt a little bit of my water on the table when I was eating and I wasn’t given a drink for a week. How I survived years there is a mystery.
Trying to remove the native from a child is a crime in itself. Trying to remove a part of a person is no different than removing a lim. It’s who I am, was. If you were to ask me for advice on what to do, this is what I would tell you. Don’t try and get involved in something you have no business being in. You don’t see my people torturing you, trying to remove the white from you. You are to dictate how people want to live, but to the extremes you went to, you went too far.
Now that I am grown, living in a world with no residential schools, my life is much different than any other 20 something year old. When people ask me where I went to school, I tell them I was homeschooled. Not wanting to get into the story of how I was one of MANY children who were exposed to the type of behavior. How I was one of the children who live In an abusive childhood. I suffer from many different mental illnesses including PTSD. Someone yelling my anem too loud can put me in an anxiety attack and have me in it for hours. I live in a constant state of fear and because of this, I have trouble forming adult relations.
If your people were so against mine, they could have gone somewhere else. We were here first and your people were the ones who came in and invaded our land. Your people were the ones who kidnapped out children to torture and starve them. You did this and now you complain about how we fight back. We fight back with everything we have because anything less will have us killed. There were so many better ways to deal with your issues and you took the hardest way. Congratulations.
Hayter Reed
